(More customer reviews)I picked this up last weekend at Jo-Ann's because I had a fabulous 40% off on regular items coupon. I had eyed this book before, but somehow the DVD inclusion had skipped my view. I brought the book home and gave it a once over and I can tell you this is a great book. It isn't too complex and it hasn't got a million intricate hints and designer touches. THIS IS A GOOD THING. If you are a beginner this book will be of real help and not make you want to give up before you start. The pictures are large and the topics are the ones you need starting with getting to know the basics of the sewing machine. A sensible place to start. The more you know about sewing machines in general and your model in particular the better you will sew. Know your equipment, read the manual and use this book as a reference. I think I could actually use this book to learn to sew if I didn't already know how. The DVD *IS* simple but not too simple. I would have to disagree with the reviewer who said it is too simple for a beginner. Nothing is too simple if it helps explain the techniques clearly. Singer has a way of producing really good books and making learning easier through good photography. I have the Singer Photo guide to Sewing and lots of other sewing books, but this one is going to be one of the two I recommend to very beginners. The other book I recommend is Sew everything Workshop by Rupp. One thing this Singer book has that doesn't appear in almost any other book is instructions to repair your garments, such as repairing zippers, simple hemming, darning etc. Invaluable information. No matter if you just want to have a simple machine for repairs and quick pillows or small jobs, or if you want to start learning and dream of sewing your own wardrobe, this book will start you off right! :) Happy Sewing!
