The Sewing Machine Attachment Handbook Review

The Sewing Machine Attachment Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great little book for those of us who love sewing attachments (in this book it's 98% pressure feet). This is especially true of the pre-computerized machine owners like myself who can't just program in a special effect, and who wonder how to use all those little extra feet that came with the 1980 Sears Kenmore, or whatever. My original machine handbook had very sketchy descriptions for its attachments and barely covered what they were for, without any insight on how to use them. This book does a wonderful job of filling in all those missing details, along with handy little tips on how to expand the original purpose of all those exotic, odd-looking pressure feet. This is a book that will nourish the soul of mechanical gadget junkies like myself.
A caveat is that unless you do a heck of a lot of sewing, and feel compelled to make your own bias binding, etc. you probably won't purchase or use many of the special feet and attachments described. Even so I found this book fascinating reading, and really expanded my ideas of what I can do with my machine as far as creating my own ruffles, pintucks and so forth, should I ever need to.
The only quibbles I have with this book is that it isn't inclusive enough. I still have a couple of mystery pressure feet that weren't described in this book, possibly because for some reason Sears Kenmore isn't even mentioned in the book's long list of sewing machines. Also, I didn't find any discussion at all of why some of the more exotic feet are really necessary, when their function can be performed adequately by a standard zigzag pressure foot. Otherwise this is a great little reference, with nicely detailed photos and descriptions that make the various techniques seem so foolproof. We know it's not really that easy, but it's nice to have a book that gives you a good idea of where to start. Definitely a need-to-have for the serious home sewer.

Regardless if you have a new or used machine, there are always questions concerning various attachments, how they are used with the machine and what functions they perform. This book covers a number of the top attachments as well as sewing feet in order to provide sewers of all levels the information and instruction they need to find the right attachment for any project. It is a reference that you will be able to refer to over and over again.

I am extremely impressed with the speed of service from this company. I ordered the 1/4in foot on Saturday morning and I received it in the mail on Monday. That's not even a full week-end. WOW! what service. As to the product itself, it is exactly what I was expecting. While I have attached it to my machine, I have not had an opportunity to actually sew with it, but I have no doubt that it will perform as well as I expect. Kudos to the company for speed of service.

This 1/4" foot is a teachers favorite, the guide blade makes you achieve that perfect 1/4". By rubbing the material against the guide you will always have a straight line. Popular with quilters, this foot is used for piecing quilt blocks, sewing narrow 1/4-inch seams and topstitching. Also known as a "Quilting" foot it is great for patchwork quilting, crazy patch quilting, french seams, heirloom sewing, traditional tucks, cross tucks and wave tucks.

Curve Master Presser Foot - plastic snap on foot with universal adapters fits most sewing machines Review

Curve Master Presser Foot - plastic snap on foot with universal adapters fits most sewing machines
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love love love this curve master presser foot! I thought I was really fast at curved piecing the old way, with pinning. When I got my new presser foot, in the midst of making a quilt with lots and lots of curves, I found out just how fast I could be. No pins, no picking out bad seams, no cussing or fussing. I was able to sew about 5 times as fast - and could do a more efficient assembly line style piecing instead of stopping to pin after each one. I will never sew a curve without it!! and the adapter included to fit my machine worked great. Well worth the price - has paid for itself already in the time saved.
As for use as a 1/4 inch foot for straight seams - it is ok if you are sewing shorter lengths, and with fabric that has a good amount of body. But if fabric is thin, or the seam is quite long, there is a sort of ruffling effect that will happen.

Brother SA210 Serger Piping Foot Review

Brother SA210 Serger Piping Foot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This foot fits many Brother sergers or some of the Huskylocks (from 700 up to the 900 series; those were made by Brother as it turns out.) I'm using it on my Huskylock 700, an obsolete model for which there are few Viking parts but the Brother work quite well. This foot certainly fits the 1034D Brother Serger, which probably is one of the most common on the market.
This is a snap-on foot; you depress the release and attach it as you would any sewing machine foot. The groove on the bottom allow you to run piping under it, either attaching it to fabric or making piping by covering cord with bias strip or straight-grain strip fabric. (Bias fabric rounds curves better.) I made a cover for my sewing machine by simply stitching piping and a strip of fabric to two sides that covered front and back. I pulled the strip around the corners of the side squares and ended up with piping in the rounded seams.
It turns out you can also sew zippers using a serger (supposedly a NO-NO) using the piping foot. Set the machine up for three thread serging, needle in the right-hand side of the machine. Attach the piping foot and place the closed zipper teeth under the groove of the foot. Stitch along the edge of the fabric. Match the other edge and put the teeth under the groove and stitch. You need a zipper four inches longer than your insert and you do not stitch down the seam first. This is a way not to have a raw edge of fabric under your zipper seam allowance. Rather nice.
If you like to make chair covers, upholstery or bags, the piping foot is very useful.

Brother's SA213 serger piping foot is a versatile attachment for sewing piping, filled bias cording, spaghetti straps, and custom straps. The foot holds and guides narrow piping, eliminating the need for pins and ensuring accurate application and an attractive and durable finish. For use with Brother machines: 1034D, 3034D, and PL-2100.

Brother SA251 Embroidery Q+ Foot Review

Brother SA251 Embroidery Q+ Foot

This is an example of user ignorance (not product problems). The foot looked like what we needed for our sewing machine, and my wife swore that it was the one she needed. However, when we got the item, it didn't work on her machine.
Shipping on it was so expensive, it wouldn't have been worth our effort to return the product. We were stuck with something we can't use.
But it wasn't the fault of the seller -- it was our own ignorance.
We finally travelled to a city where they sold the feet, and got a salesman to help us find what we needed.

The Distinctive Roller Sewing Machine Presser Foot is effective for preventing fabric (stretchy materials like jerseys and knitted fabrics or hard-to-feed materials like leather or vinyl) from slipping or puckering, because the presser foot rotates to feed the upper layer together with the lower layer without slippage, so the upper layer and lower layer are fed simultaneously. I bought this (and the brother narrow hem foot which is the same thing so stay away from that too imo)and tried to use it on anything. It will only work on lightweight fabrics and even then the stitching is hard to look uniform. The stitches look wonky and the hem is incredibly small (5mm or less). I decided to just go for it and get the "distinctive" rolled hem foot set which has seven different and USEFUL sized hems (like 1/4" and 5/8", etc.)and give you a chance to keep those hems clean and professional looking. It is $50 for the set, but i am so much happier to have hemming feet that actually work!

Brother 40-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine CE4000

I teach sewing lessons in Spring Texas (www.GetSewing.com). I was tired of students bring "problem" machines. I bought this machine for because two students brought ones like it and I was impressed with the quality for the price range. A good thing is, you can sew very slowly. The machine goes when you press on the foot pedal, it doesn't growl and hesitate. You can also sew fast too. The only thing I don't like on this model is that every time you stop, it stops with the needle down in the fabric and you must turn the hand wheel to move it up. It would be much more useful if the needle stopped in the position.

Brother 1/4-Inch Quilting Foot Review

Brother 1/4-Inch Quilting Foot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This foot helps you to create perfect 1/4 inch seams easily & quickly.
As another reviewer noted, it is important to check your needle
position after attaching this foot to your machine. The hole that
the needle passes through is small, and if your needle is not in the
correct position it will hit the foot and break.I have a
Brother CS 6000 and the default needle position is to the left,
instead of in the center. So, BEFORE you begin sewing with
this foot, you have to position your needle to the center. It is important
to remember this if you have been sewing with this foot, but turn the
machine off, because when you turn the machine on again the needle positon
will automatically revert to the left, and you will have to reset it to the
center before you begin sewing again.
If you cannot tell by eye if the needle is aligned with the hole in the foot
use the handwheel to gently lower the needle above the hole. This way you
will be able to see if it is aligned without breaking the needle.
This is a great price for this foot, as well.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since I own and have used both products, I'll review both the Brother SA109 Binding Foot and the Distinctive Tape Binding Foot at the same time. This will essentially be a comparison of the two.
Both products are about the same price, at the present time there is about a $2 difference, giving a slight edge to Distinctive. Both can be used on most low-shank sewing machines that accept this type of snap-on foot. I've never cut my own binding but have always used bias tape so I cannot state for a fact how either would work for hand-cut binding strips.
The construction between the two brands is quite different. The Brother is made completely of metal while the Distinctive is a combination of metal and plastic. Therein lies the biggest difference between the two. The Brother has no adjustment so is limited to a maximum finished size of 1/4" (7mm) while the Distinctive can be adjusted from about 3/8" to 3/4" (5 to 20mm) finished size. Advantage: Distinctive
The construction design also has an effect on ease of use. The Distinctive Foot has 2 grooves in the plastic. You place your folded bias tape edges into the groves, adjust for width, snap the foot onto the machine and slide the fabric between the two edges of the binding tape. The Brother design is more like a narrowing funnel. Push the bias tape through the opening until it appears on the other side, snap the foot on the machine, and slide in the fabric. You can, of course, perform the above with either foot on the machine, but I've often found it easier to attach the foot after I've put the binding tape in. With the design difference I've found the Brother foot easier to use. Keeping the bias tape and the fabric correctly aligned was easier and I was able to sew a little faster. If I didn't keep the bias tape and the fabric aligned exactly right when using the Distinctive foot, I had the bias tape come out of the groove. If I was lucky I caught it right away, if not, I would have to remove the stitches and re-do a small section. I think it may be especially problematic if you cut your own binding strips and they aren't pefectly straight. Advantage: Brother.
In conclusion, I'm a guy who has taken up quilting as a retirement hobby. I have arthritis and my hands shake a bit so I look for anything that will make things easier for me. I happy I own both the Brother SA109 and the Distinctive Tape Binding Presser Foot, they both work well in different ways. The Brother is easier to use while the Distinctive is more versatile. Neither is perfect, but for me, they are a much better solution than applying bias tape by hand or trying to perfectly fold, iron then sew binding strips into place with a regular presser foot. For that, they each get 4 stars.
