Japanese Country Quilting: Sashiko Patterns and Projects for Beginners Review

Japanese Country Quilting: Sashiko Patterns and Projects for Beginners
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Traditional Japanese country clothes were quilted for warmth. The quilting patterns on the natural indigo dyed hemp or cotton are called sashiko and often take the form of repeating, geometric patterns.
Karen Matsunaga gives a nice background into the daily life of her Japanese family, and also the history of some of the traditional patterns.
The book has five complete projects, plus sashiko stitching pattern. The patterns are printed on grids, with helpful directional lines to show the direction in which the stitching should take place. Recommended for anyone starting out in sashiko quilting

Quilt As Desired: Your Guide to Straight-Line and Free-Motion Quilting Review

Quilt As Desired: Your Guide to Straight-Line and Free-Motion Quilting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned this book for some time, and today I finally pulled it off the shelf as I pondered my latest queen-sized project. I am a piecer more than a quilter, and quilting a large quilt pretty much frazzles me and keeps me "in the ditch". Boy, was I smart to add this book to my "read later" shelf, because "later" came very suddenly today!!
This book pretty much answers all quilting design questions for all skill levels, primarily for short-armers (like me), but it also will assist long-armers (wanna-be) in the overall quilting process. I was looking for filler inspirations and all-over designs, and I found a whole lot more. Full of practice exercises (not required), this text also differentiates the techniques for straight-line vs free-motion quilting.
Ms. Frable NEVER comes off as high-and-mighty by implicitly ordering you to do things only one way. She gives the basics, then gently suggests alternatives along the lines of "if you are willing to do X, then Y becomes possible".
Frable breaks this book into 3 sections: Technical Aspects, Patterns, and Projects. I could comfortably jump right into the Patterns section, which accomodates both marked and unmarked designs. This section also clearly indicates pros and cons of each method, with really nice close-up photos. The Projects section builds up in skill-level, revisiting techniques from the Technical and Patterns sections, while also adding new techniques and even more hints and photos.
Ms. Frable clearly put a lot of time and effort into creating a highly usable reference for us quilters who currently may lack a bit of self-confidence in the quilting process. With just a few words, plus lots of truely helpful tips and photos, this book is THE compendium that I will find myself coming back to time and again.

Geometric Gems: Quilts from Diamonds, Circles, and Squares Review

Geometric Gems: Quilts from Diamonds, Circles, and Squares
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are some quilt books you have to have, just because they are fun. This is one of those books.
Cathy Wierzbicki has created quilts which look complicated, but are designed in a way which makes them approachable. I have already bookmarked my copy with quilts I want to make. Many of the quilts feature uniquely shaped blocks. "Think Inside the Box" features floating boxes made with 60o triangles, and the cover quilt, "Diamond Dust", uses pieced rectangles to form diamond blocks. Although these quilts look difficult or complicated they are not.
My favorite quilt is "Pajama Prayer" which uses pieced squares of several sizes to make a great quilt. It has a sewn writing technique which I have never seen before. It allows you to sew embroidery type lettering onto fabric with your normal sewing machine. I can hardly wait to try it out.
This is a book which I am thrilled to add to my personal library!

Complete Guide to Quilting Review

Complete Guide to Quilting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been quilting for some time now... However, we can all use a little help now and then on a technique we're not used to using all the time. What I absolutely LOVE about this book is that they give you several different options for almost every technique out there. This book stays on my quilting table at all times! There are tons of charts on quilt sizes, triangle sizes, flying geese, etc. It's just a wealth of great information and presented in an easy to understand manner with lots of pictures.
I have looked at several other "how-to" books and have not yet found one to even come close to replacing this one. I even took it and had it spiral bound so it was easier to look through and hold my place open. It's been worth every penny and it's not even the most expensive one out there!

Magic Stack-n-Whack Quilts Review

Magic Stack-n-Whack Quilts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a beginning quilter, I found this book to be an excellent guide for easily making kaleidoscope quilts without mirrors or extensive measuring and cutting. As a paper crafter as well, I found the technique great for collages.
The book starts out by explaining how to choose fabric and pick colors. It's a great plus that almost any fabric that has a repeat pattern can be used. Then, there are lots of great tips on rotary cutting, machine piecing & pressing.
Next, the stack-n-whack process is demonstrated in detail with step-by-step instructions and full-color photos. Fourteen different quilt projects, in 7 different styles follow. Illustrations are used instead of photos for these.
The quilts themselves are beautiful. There are large color photos of each one. In the back there are guides and patterns for all the projects as well as lesson plans for classes.

I have done simple machine quilting such as stitch in the ditch and my own free motion quilting but I have never followed a pattern as I thought it would be too hard. Twice Quilted show me I was wrong and gives me the tools I need to learn to follow a pattern.
There is a book that takes you through the process and 40 patterns. The book explains what supplies and equipment you will need, how to modify the patterns so you can create your own designs and how to stitch the designs. There are tips on free-motion quilting and lots of graphics for us visual minded quilters!
Grab some tracing paper or tear away stabilizer, a marking pen and your quilt top and have a ball. Don't let "tradition" hold you back. Do your own thing and make your quilt really yours!

Fiskars 95217097 45 mm Rotary Cutter Review

Fiskars 95217097 45 mm Rotary Cutter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the opportunity to try the Olfa and the Fiskar rotary cutters from a friend who had both. After trying them for about 15 minutes, I decided I preferred the Fiskar cutter. The Olfa was okay and worked well, but the Fiskar cutter felt better ergonomically. The Fiskar handle was curved, sturdier with a better grip. I don't care for the straight cutters. Another friend also preferred the Fiskar cutter. We all decided Fiskar cutter was the best ergonomically, but will probably buy the Olfa blades. I hope this helps for those who may be on the border between the two. I rate it 4 stars because the blade is better on the Olfa.

A handy tool for any craft enthusiast's toolbox, this general-purpose 45 mm rotary cutter makes easy work of cutting through heavy stock or multiple layers of fabric, paper, felt, vinyl, cardboard, mat board, cloth, or fiberglass material. The unit features a contoured loop handle for a secure, comfortable, left- or right-handed grip; a long-lasting razor-sharp blade; and alignment markings to ensure a correctly positioned blade guard. The engagement lever on the top of the tool lowers the blade. When finished, press the release button on the side of the cutter to retract the blade for storage and safety. With fewer parts and no small washers, the cutter's blade can be changed effortlessly thanks to the easy-grip nut with a plastic cap for tightening. Cotton Theory Quilting: Quilt First-Then Assemble (Cotton Theory Series) Review

Cotton Theory Quilting: Quilt First-Then Assemble (Cotton Theory Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author overly complicates the process of quilting as you go and relies heavily on machine embroidery to "quilt" with. While she does offer some helpful advice on bobbin work she fails to address how to adjust a bobbin tension for sewing machines with drop in bobbins (for those of us with vertical bobbins she correctly recommends buying a second bobbin case).
The projects are OK, well thought out, and the directions are clear but most of the quilts are basic squares and rectangles. If you are looking for help in working with traditional quilt designs (log cabin, bow tie, drunkard's path, etc) this isn't the book for you.
I haven't reviewed the three other well known quilt as you go books yet but here are the titles for those who are interested:
Quilt-As-You-Go by Sandra Millet
Reversible Quilts: Two at a Time by Sharon Pederson
Crazy Shortcut Quilts by Martguerita McManus (NOTE: this is different from crazy quilting)
Happy quilting!

Little Birds: 26 Handmade Projects to Sew, Stitch, Quilt & Love (Design Collective) Review

Little Birds: 26 Handmade Projects to Sew, Stitch, Quilt and Love (Design Collective)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book contains a colorful flock of fun and folksy sewing projects with a contemporary edge. The projects are varied: mobiles and ornaments and stuffies and aprons and quilts and wreaths fill the pages. It was hard to pick which project to start with. So far, I've made the peacock and I have 5 other projects earmarked.
I do want to offer some warning. Even though it claims to be for beginners, this book isn't really for anyone who doesn't have basic sewing skills. There isn't always precise step-by-step instructions- I had to fiddle a bit with the peacock's beak and tail to make it work. Luckily, most of these projects don't require careful precision. I think some fiddling gives each piece its own character.
Quite a few of the projects use embroidery for the finishing touches. There is a very basic guide to embroidery stitches in the back of the book but I think you would fare better if you hone your skills before tackling the projects that depend on your ability to do this well. Ditto for the quilts. I've never made a quilt and I would only feel comfortable attempting one from this book if I had some basic quilting skills already.
For somebody with strong sewing skills this book is 5 star. But, despite my intermediate-beginner status, I found enough projects in here to feel that the book was worth the purchase price.
