(More customer reviews)I had never done free-motion quilting before I bought this. It was super easy to attach to my Brother sewing machine. It took me a little bit of practice to get the hang of it (I did stipple quilting on a baby quilt) but it wasn't that hard. It did make a squeaking noise while I sewed. I'm not sure if it was my machine or the foot. I recommend getting some quilting gloves that help you grip the fabric as you move it. My hands and wrists got sore from gripping the fabric for so long.

(More customer reviews)I have owned this book for some time, and today I finally pulled it off the shelf as I pondered my latest queen-sized project. I am a piecer more than a quilter, and quilting a large quilt pretty much frazzles me and keeps me "in the ditch". Boy, was I smart to add this book to my "read later" shelf, because "later" came very suddenly today!!
This book pretty much answers all quilting design questions for all skill levels, primarily for short-armers (like me), but it also will assist long-armers (wanna-be) in the overall quilting process. I was looking for filler inspirations and all-over designs, and I found a whole lot more. Full of practice exercises (not required), this text also differentiates the techniques for straight-line vs free-motion quilting.
Ms. Frable NEVER comes off as high-and-mighty by implicitly ordering you to do things only one way. She gives the basics, then gently suggests alternatives along the lines of "if you are willing to do X, then Y becomes possible".
Frable breaks this book into 3 sections: Technical Aspects, Patterns, and Projects. I could comfortably jump right into the Patterns section, which accomodates both marked and unmarked designs. This section also clearly indicates pros and cons of each method, with really nice close-up photos. The Projects section builds up in skill-level, revisiting techniques from the Technical and Patterns sections, while also adding new techniques and even more hints and photos.
Ms. Frable clearly put a lot of time and effort into creating a highly usable reference for us quilters who currently may lack a bit of self-confidence in the quilting process. With just a few words, plus lots of truely helpful tips and photos, this book is THE compendium that I will find myself coming back to time and again.

Beginning with an inspirational gallery of work we are led from the basics of supplies, tools and threads, through the complexities of getting the best from your sewing machine to the point at which the "Color Dances" begin. The book ends with projects of varying intricacy and a troubleshooting guide.
All in all a comprehensive book that manages to instil good practice, inspires experimentation and is still a good read!
This book is staying very close to my machine!

Harriet Hargrave's book of Heirloom quilting by machine are great because it opens your mind. But this book fills in all of the details like HOW to handle the quilt thru the machine. My favorite tips are about making a "mashed potato gravy well" of fabric, and how to go about tackling a quilting project (did you know not to start out stippling?)!!
My quilting has improved SO MUCH imediately after I read this book. I found out why I was getting broken threads and knots!! I really recommend this one!!
