I was searching amazon for sewing supplies and came across this kit along with the SFSE book. This is so great that this kit is offered. It has everything I need to sew projects for years to come. The Gingher scissors cut through fabric like butter. If your starting to learn to sew and need notions and supplies, this is by far the easiest way to go. And you don't pay shipping on a bunch of individual items.

Brother PC-420 PRW Limited Edition Project Runway Sewing Machine Review

Brother PC-420 PRW Limited Edition Project Runway Sewing Machine

(More customer reviews)
This a nice machine. I read the manual through once and was able to sew on it with confidence. I usually have trouble getting used to a new machine. It's very quiet and sews like a dream. There are many features that most seamstress' would love. My favorites are the automatic threader, the adjustable sewing speed (you can go real slow when working on something intricate), the auto thread cutter and the one touch reverse stitch. There are so many more features that I haven't used yet. I've only found one thing I don't like and that is the automatic presser foot lift and lower feature. There is a metal bar thing that goes under your sewing table and you use your knee to raise and lower the foot. It's kind of hard to do although I'm sure it would get easier with practice. I just do it manually. This is a solid, well built machine. I was using a $700 Husqvarna. Boy did I get ripped off when I bought that one. This machine can do so much more and was almost half the price. I did a lot of research looking for a new machine. Consumer reports recommended a different "Project Runway" machine. I looked everywhere but couldn't find one to purchase. I came across this machine and found it was similiar to the other but with more features. So I started reading reviews about it by people who purchased it. I could not find one bad review! That tells me all I need to know. If you're considering this machine you can buy it with confidence. It is a fantastic sewing machine at a fantastic price!!!

Brother PC-210 PRW Limited Edition Project Runway Sewing Machine Review

Brother PC-210 PRW Limited Edition Project Runway Sewing Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this machine a couple of weeks ago. It is an upgrade for me from a VERY basic Brother machine. I bought mine at a sewing machine store; actually cheaper than Amazon and I get their expertise/service.
One major feature I was looking for in my new machine is speed control. I am teaching my daughter to sew; this machine can be set to sew very very ssssslllloooww. Great when trying to teach a nine year old. Threading is pretty simple; there is a nifty automatic needle threader. I'm using it but threading a machine needle was never a big deal for me. I also like the automatic needle up feature. On every machine I ever used previously, I had to turn the wheel when done sewing a line to raise the needle. This machine does it automatically.
This Brother makes a very nice buttonhole; not as nice perhaps as a machine twice its price but still, just fine. It has this neat buttonhole foot in which you put your desired button in the back and it uses that button to automatically make the proper sized buttonhole. All in one step. This is WAY better than my old machine.
The bobbin is a top-drop-in. No more bringing up the loop, just put in in and sew.
One feature I've yet to use is a front stop/go control button. I guess that if you didn't want to or couldn't use a foot pedal you could use this button instead. I can see it being nice for buttonholes; you just position your fabric, push the "go" button, and it makes all the side of the buttonhole and stops automatically.
This machine trys to make things oops-proof. If you've ever jambed your machine because you started sewing with the presser foot up, well, that can't happen with this machine. If things aren't "right", it will give you an error beep.
Another nice feature is that the machine automatically sets an "ideal" stitch length/width. You can overide it but for the most part, the defalt is perfect, especially with the decorative stitches.
There are several decorative stiches; I haven't quite figured out the best way to put them to use but that's just my own lack of creativity.
One last nice feature is a built-in foot holder. In front of the free-arm is a flip-down compartment that has molded, labeled spots for all your feet. It comes with a standard foot, zipper foot, blind hem stitch foot, decorative stitching foot, overlock foot, button attacher foot, and buttonhole foot. Also in the compartment is a molded space for a seam ripper and 4 bobbins (included). I've found it nice to have all these feet in one spot. I have a couple specialty feet from my old Brother machine and they fit and work just fine on my new one. An added plus.
One note; this machine takes bobbins that are a bit thicker than older ones. Buy a bunch of new ones; they say old ones won't work.
All in all, I'm very happy. I'm glad I went with this model and would buy again.
***edited to add: my one gripe about this machine is that the built in lights are lacking. My old machine put out quite a lot of light; this one is MUCH dimmer.

Sew Fast Sew Easy's Hipster 1/4 Circle Flared Skirt Sewing Pattern Review

Sew Fast Sew Easy's Hipster 1/4 Circle Flared Skirt Sewing Pattern
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been looking for an easy circle skirt pattern that I could use over and over, and this definitely fits the bill. It took me about two hours to make my first skirt, but I added a few embellishments that made the process a little more complicated. I believe that if one makes their skirt exactly as described in the directions, then it would probably take an hour or so at the most.
The only reason that I don't give this wonderful pattern a 5-star rating is that there are a few little things that could stand to be improved. First, the directions are simple, but littered with amateurish, hand-drawn illustrations. The quality of the illustrations isn't so great and it sort of annoyed me that I paid $12 for a pattern they didn't even bother to illustrate very well. Second, the instructions tell you to choose your skirt length (a very nice feature) but to add 5 inches to this number when actually cutting the material. I found that the additional 5 inches were unnecessary. These extra inches just add an additional step for later, when you would have to hem the bottom up considerably. In my opinion, it would be better to just decide your skirt length, then add only a few inches to allow for the waistband and your bottom hem. That way, you wouldn't have to worry about taking the skirt up later. Third, it's a bit annoying to find out that you have to measure out your skirt length each time you use the pattern. Instead of a more traditional pattern in which you cut against a tissue paper template, this pattern requires a little bit of leg work, though I think that's ok since you can choose multiple skirt lengths depending on your mood.
But those three very small concerns are outweighed by the utility and ease of this pattern. If you're like me and you like your A-line skirts to fall to just below your knees, you could also just measure out your ideal skirt on a piece of muslin, then cut that out and use it just like a tissue paper pattern to save yourself time in the future.
BTW, this pattern calls for using 60-inch wide fabric only, but if you can't find a fabric you really like in that measurement, then you can do what I did. I used the Sew Fast So Easy Pattern, but folded the paper almost in half (not quite in half since I had to take into account a seam allowance of 1/2 inch on each side). That way, you can use smaller width fabrics if you need to. This adds an extra seam to fuss with, but I think the added flexibility of possible materials is worth it.

Brother CE-5000PRW - 50 Stitch Sewing Machine Review

Brother CE-5000PRW - 50 Stitch Sewing Machine

I bought this Brother machine to replace an old Singer machine that wore out it's gears. The Brother CE-5000 is a great machine. We bought it refurbished and it looks new. Works great; really can't say anything bad about it.
However, one advantage is also a disadvantage if you are used to an older, and heavier machine. The Brother is lightweight and easy to move around, store, etc ... a good thing. It also doesn't stay put when you are wrestling heavy materials around to get it in position to sew. This takes some getting used to. The old machine was built into a table so I may have to build a platform to hold this machine in place. We recommend it as a good machine.

When a product is refurbished, it is made to look like and operate as a brand new item should. Many times it is as simple as the box being opened by mistake or for quality checks. Once the box has been opened, that item cannot be sold as new. Items with serious malfunctions are not refurbished, it would cost too much to refurbish them to 'like new' condition. Each refurbished item we feature is completely inspected, rerun down the production line and triple checked for quality before being packed and shipped. Most of the time the only difference between new and refurbished is the brown box and the lower price, which is your gain as an educated consumer.
