Geometric Gems: Quilts from Diamonds, Circles, and Squares Review

Geometric Gems: Quilts from Diamonds, Circles, and Squares
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are some quilt books you have to have, just because they are fun. This is one of those books.
Cathy Wierzbicki has created quilts which look complicated, but are designed in a way which makes them approachable. I have already bookmarked my copy with quilts I want to make. Many of the quilts feature uniquely shaped blocks. "Think Inside the Box" features floating boxes made with 60o triangles, and the cover quilt, "Diamond Dust", uses pieced rectangles to form diamond blocks. Although these quilts look difficult or complicated they are not.
My favorite quilt is "Pajama Prayer" which uses pieced squares of several sizes to make a great quilt. It has a sewn writing technique which I have never seen before. It allows you to sew embroidery type lettering onto fabric with your normal sewing machine. I can hardly wait to try it out.
This is a book which I am thrilled to add to my personal library!

Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing: Patterns and How-To for 24 Fresh and Easy Projects Review

Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing: Patterns and How-To for 24 Fresh and Easy Projects
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would have given it three or even four as it's very cute, but the instructions are a bit too BRIEF..... I can't see how it's marketed as simple, when I was baffled - and I am in no means a beginning sewer. I've been sewing for 30 years, made my own wedding dress, coats, jackets etc.-.... I love these project books though - when they're good! I bought this book mainly for the inspiration and partly for the hat pattern - I love hats. The brim doesn't fit the crown, and the crown doesn't fit the top. It is impossible to fit them together. Whether the crown is turned with the slightly wider circumference towards the brim or the other way. Furthermore, the whole thing is enormous. Something is very wrong with this pattern, and it ruins the whole book for me. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Edited to add - there are huge amounts of people out there who have had problems with this hat, as I found out after doing a search on the net. And I am REALLY unimpressed with the author - I wrote to her website early August and a very sweet assistant told me she couldn't help but perhaps I would find a flickr group that could - they couldn't - and that Lotta would issue corrections or contact me after she came back from her holidays - she hasn't!

Singer Ruffler #086742-P Review

Singer Ruffler #086742-P
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a really nifty idea, and it works really well for making pleats, but I can not get it to gather. Everytime I put it on the setting for Gather it makes a big knot in one spot, and that's it. The instructions are very small, and not clear in my opinion. There is really no where that I have found for instructions online either. So unless you already know how to use this, or have someone who can show you I think you may end up very frustrated (like me).

Ruffler Foot Review

Ruffler Foot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Put on the correct machine, it worked very well. In fact I have sewn about 7 "market skirts" - dirctions for doing so for a little girl was on the internet as a free-bie , and another site told you how to make it fit an adult. Both little and big turned out well.
The ruffler saves a lot of time, and the gathering is uniform. When working with slick polyester, I had to put interfacing on the edges I was ruffling, but, by golly, I had to do so with straight sewing also.
Bottom line: if you need one, call the dealer and make sure it will fit your machine. I bought two through Amazon. One, the generic, cost $15 and postage paid; the other was $32.95 to fit a Janome. It was also postage paid. The generic fit both Brother and Janome, and the Janome fit only the Janome.

Ruffles are easy to make with the ruffler. Use them as a fashion accent on blouses and dresses, as as border for sheer curtains, or as a flounce for bedspreads, skirts, etc. You can make pleated or gathered ruffles, and you can even make and apply them at the same time!

Sew Fast Sew Easy Dotted Pattern Paper Review

Sew Fast Sew Easy Dotted Pattern Paper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've just received the dotted paper I ordered from this seller by this site. I was so supprised with such a thin envelope contained only 4 yards of regular dotted paper, and it is not special comparing with other regular one, but I paid $10 for it with $4.80 shipping fee (Totally $3.7/y from this seller. But in the regular store, only $61 for a roll of 500 Yards, $0.12/yard). The price is even more expensive than retailed cotton fabric!
Before I made this order, I wrote to this seller asking about what the yardage was for a price of $10 showed in this site because it does not indecade clearly. But I 've never got any reply until now. Because I trusted this Amarzon and I needed this paper very soon, so later I just directly ordered.
Now I need to deal with this seller and see if it actually offer refund.

My machine is low shank and I used the red attachment. I found two problems with the basic white attachment holder: 1. It did not "set down" close enough after lowering the presser foot bar, 2. While sewing the zipper, it slid freely along the little bar thus sliding under and breaking the needle.

Sew Fast Sew Easy's Hipster 1/4 Circle Flared Skirt Sewing Pattern Review

Sew Fast Sew Easy's Hipster 1/4 Circle Flared Skirt Sewing Pattern
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been looking for an easy circle skirt pattern that I could use over and over, and this definitely fits the bill. It took me about two hours to make my first skirt, but I added a few embellishments that made the process a little more complicated. I believe that if one makes their skirt exactly as described in the directions, then it would probably take an hour or so at the most.
The only reason that I don't give this wonderful pattern a 5-star rating is that there are a few little things that could stand to be improved. First, the directions are simple, but littered with amateurish, hand-drawn illustrations. The quality of the illustrations isn't so great and it sort of annoyed me that I paid $12 for a pattern they didn't even bother to illustrate very well. Second, the instructions tell you to choose your skirt length (a very nice feature) but to add 5 inches to this number when actually cutting the material. I found that the additional 5 inches were unnecessary. These extra inches just add an additional step for later, when you would have to hem the bottom up considerably. In my opinion, it would be better to just decide your skirt length, then add only a few inches to allow for the waistband and your bottom hem. That way, you wouldn't have to worry about taking the skirt up later. Third, it's a bit annoying to find out that you have to measure out your skirt length each time you use the pattern. Instead of a more traditional pattern in which you cut against a tissue paper template, this pattern requires a little bit of leg work, though I think that's ok since you can choose multiple skirt lengths depending on your mood.
But those three very small concerns are outweighed by the utility and ease of this pattern. If you're like me and you like your A-line skirts to fall to just below your knees, you could also just measure out your ideal skirt on a piece of muslin, then cut that out and use it just like a tissue paper pattern to save yourself time in the future.
BTW, this pattern calls for using 60-inch wide fabric only, but if you can't find a fabric you really like in that measurement, then you can do what I did. I used the Sew Fast So Easy Pattern, but folded the paper almost in half (not quite in half since I had to take into account a seam allowance of 1/2 inch on each side). That way, you can use smaller width fabrics if you need to. This adds an extra seam to fuss with, but I think the added flexibility of possible materials is worth it.

Amy Butler Blue Sky Hat Pattern By The Each Review

Amy Butler Blue Sky Hat Pattern By The Each
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, in order to help out the previous reviewer of this pattern and anyone else who is considering the skull cap pattern for a loved one or friend who has undergone chemotherapy: one has to take into account that this skull cap pattern is designed for persons who still have hair which takes up room inside the skull cap. If you sew this pattern without adjusting (making smaller) to adjust for a chemotherapy patients lack of hair the cap will be too large. Also this skull cap is designed with cotton fabrics which are not as forgiving as knit fabrics (no stretch). If you are an intermediate to experienced seamstress you could easily adjust the cap size as you went along by fitting it to the person while you construct it and, in fact, when I sew any hat in a woven fabric I make fittings a mandatory part of the hat construction process. There are many free alternative patterns for caps in single knit and copious free knitting and crochet patterns (search, for example, for 'cloche', a close fitting cap design from the 1930's) online if you wish to sew generic sized caps for chemotherapy patients remembering *always* that smaller is better.
This pattern is concise, the instructions are wonderful *if you know what you are doing with a sewing machine* and have sewn with commercial patterns at least two or three times previously. If you wish to use Amy Butler patterns to learn to sew I would suggest beginning with her quilts which are fun and easy and a wonderful place to start. If you, as the person reading this, has sewn previously then please know that I have constructed both hats several times for myself and others without difficulty and have absolutely loved the results, as have my friends and customers. The cost of this pattern is completely offset by my ability to create fashion accessories in the colors I wish rather than spending a fortune on hats/caps in retail stores. Also, when this sun hat gets wet I can throw it in the washer/dryer and it comes out new, always a plus. :)

Pattern Notcher Review

Pattern Notcher
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this at Britex in San Francisco last summer and have used it regularly since to notch patterns. However, my favorite use for it is to clip curves in seam allowances where I once used scissors to cut little 'v's. It's much faster. If I could change it - I'd have it cut through more than two layers of fabric and be a little sharper - to separate the punched fabric completely. Even so - I paid $25 for it and think it well worth the price. It's well-made, sturdy and works well left or right handed.
