(More customer reviews)i ordered this book in the hopes that it would include the pattern for the the award-winning quilt on the cover--which i had seen in quilt magazines and fallen madly in love with. it does that, along with really good, detailed instructions.
but the book is more than just a source for a pattern. the first part includes instructions, with excellent photos, of schamber's approaches to turned edge and raw edge machine applique and her take on paper piecing. she has some very good truly new ideas, many of which i will try with my next applique. she also presents some very nice designs as practice projects for her techniques. even those of us who love needleturn applique can find ideas to make the process easier and more precise.
there is a gallery of her designs, which are wonderful, with many delightful details in the borders and bindings.
what i didn't expect was the breathtaking quality of her quilting. it is amazing, stunning, inspiring. even if you don't plan on ever doing applique, this book is worth buying for the quilting alone. it is completely contemporary but has the depth of the best 19th century examples. i hope she puts out a book on quilting very very soon!
i would not just recommend this book to quilters, i would insist they buy it. her designs, her color and fabric choices, her techniques--they are a master class in quilting from this multi-award winning artist and offer years of inspiration.

(More customer reviews)I wish I lived closer to Ms. Pederson so I could learn in person from her. She has a GREAT book and the way it is written makes me ready to machine appliqué.
Her book starts out like many quilting books --- talking about the tools you need to do it. BUT what her book has that I have never found in any other is a GREAT explanation of machine needle sizes and thread sizes. I now understand it and will keep her book handy for when I forget what she said. (Old age does that to you! hehe)
Another thing I have never found in quilting books is something called "The Brooklyn Revolver". As she says it is not a gun but a very handy tool for gluing up many small pieces of appliqué.
21 pages of "get ready to appliqué" instructions begin Ms. Pederson's book and you should read every word if you are a beginner appliqué-er. If you are a more experienced one, then you should read every word because I know you will find a tip or two you didn't know before.
There are ten different quilt patterns and each has a paragraph about the quilt before the rest of the instructions are given. The material and cutting lists are clear and easy to follow. The step-by-step instructions for assembling the blocks have graphics to help you visualize what you are creating. Templates are provided although some need to be enlarged. And the assembly and finishing instructions complete the patterns.
There are, of course, color photos of each quilts and the finished quilt size is also provided. The final two pages are a resource list and an overview of the author. So, grab a copy and start appliquéing!

Simple Comforts: 12 Cozy Lap Quilts Review

(More customer reviews)Kim Diehl presents us with one more fine book in her "Simple" series. I already own "Simple Seasons", so I snapped up the new "Simple Comforts" as soon as I saw it.
These "Simple" books tend toward traditional patterns done in strong colorations with just the right mix of color and contrast, and not TOO much applique. Ms. Diehl's style also lends itself very well to scrappyness, and "Simple Comforts" is a wonderful resource to inspire you to finally deal with those scraps.
The Table of Contents page provides thumbnail photos of each of the 12 quilt patterns, which is a most helpful editing technique that I wish all publishers would utilize. You instantly see the full range Diehl's colorful interpretation of traditional patterns.
Of course, you can make these quilts using really modern/mod fabrics, and there is one particular quilt - "Checkerberry Bliss" - that is a great exercise in contrast in black and light greens. My favorite is "Twilight Hopscotch", a really lovely star/chain variation in tone-on-tone greens on neutral; I am thinking of making this one first to use as a shower curtain.
Scattered throughout the book are Diehl's "Pin Points", which are helpful insets which offer handy technique tips. Also worth noting: each pattern includes directional arrows for "proper" seam pressing, which I rely on to help me best-match pieced seams.
I look forward to more "Simple" books from Kim Diehl; whether this is your first of her books or not, I think this one will inspire those of us who prefer colorful yet still largely traditional patterns. "Simply" a winner!!
