Gingher G-6R 6-Inch Knife-Edge Appliqué Scissors Review

Gingher G-6R 6-Inch Knife-Edge Appliquandeacute; Scissors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've done all forms of needle crafts all my life but have never owned applique scissors until these. Now I wish I'd discovered them years ago. Trimming goes much quicker and there's no worry of "accidentally" cutting into a design or background if used properly, letting the large blade be your shield and guide, making them useful for any close trimming, not just applique.
All that's said about them in the description and reviews is true.

With its durable double-plated chrome-over-nickel finish, this pair of 6-inch knife-edge appliqué scissors features a unique design best suited for appliqué work, embroidery, and rug making. The paddle-shaped blade pushes away the bottom layer of fabric or embroidery backing for a clear cutting path and flawless, controlled cuts close to the stitching. In addition, its offset handle creates a comfortable hand position above the work surface. The appliqué scissors measure 1-1/2 by 1-4/5 by 6 inches and carry a limited lifetime warranty.

Micro Stitch Starter Kit Review

Micro Stitch Starter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm very short - 4'11", and I am always having to bring my pants to the tailors to be hemmed at $15-25 a pop, depending on where I go (it's expensive where I live!) I got tired of having to pay exhorbitant prices to have my pants taken up about an inch. I thought about using hem tape or stitch witch, and even looked into buying a small sewing machine (I don't know how to sew, however). Then I saw this product, and thought I'd at least try it. I LOVE IT. I hemmed three pairs of twill pants and a pair of jeans today and it took me about 15 minutes. You insert a plastic strip of very small "tacks" into the gun, turn your pants inside out, turn up the cuff to the length desired, insert the needle of the gun through the fabric, and pull the trigger. That's it. Take them off, and use as many tacks as you like around the hemline. The little plastic clips, or "tacks," are very hard to see once you're finished. I used the black ones on my blue pants, and they're barely noticable. I wish they made these in a tan color for khakis. I'll try using the white tacks and see how that looks. I'm very happy I bought this product, though. Now I can probably hem *most* of my pants on my own, and don't have to wait a week to get them back. And, the best part, you can remove the little tacks very easily. This is awesome, because this system allows you to adjust the hem length at will depending on which shoes you're wearing, and it literally takes only a few minutes -- I could probably do it in a minute or less if I hussled -- to hem a pair of pants. Do I enjoy having little plastic clips at the bottom of my pants leg. Not really - I'd rather have them sewn - but on the other hand, no one except me would ever notice them, and it's a practical way to save $$$ if you are constantly having to have your clothes hemmed. Highly recommend this product until something better comes along for do-it-yourself fast and easy alterations.

I'm not sure why something resembling a hair brush is so expensive. My guess - this is one of the only felting mats I could find online. Overall, a good product but I would have gotten a bigger one if they were cheaper. I probably should have just bought a hair brush.

Xyron Creatopia Multi-Function Crafting Machine Review

Xyron Creatopia Multi-Function Crafting Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a crafter or scrapbooker, but I am a mother who does the occasional project with her school-age daughter. I've never owned another crafting tool such as from the expensive Cricut line, and frankly, I was intrigued by a 'multi-function' crafting machine that doesn't use batteries, heat or electricity to get the job done, and I jumped at the chance to check it out for myself.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
"It's heavy and pretty big!" This could be considered portable, but I don't think I'd want to lug it around much, as with each function change you need a different cartridge such as the Xyron 3405-30-00 Creatopia Cutz Cutting Cartridge Starter Kit for cutting, and the Xyron 3404-30-00 Creatopia Border Patternz Roller Cartridge Starter Kit with Bonus Floral Cartridge for embossing, as well as the cutting and embossing cartridges that work with the starter kits for each. A buyer of this item would really want to have a space where they could use it and have ample storage for the cartridges that make it work.
"It's solidly made." I'm sure that with proper care this machine could be used effectively for all its muti-functions for many years to come. The Xyron Refillz (adhesives and laminates), Patternz (embossing), Cutz (cutting) and Shapez (die cutting - introduced in 2010), are all part of the Creatopia line that will be used to expand the possibilities of this machine. Each cartridge and starter kit that I received with my special Vine package were sturdy and milled to fit easily together for smooth operation.
"I could do a lot with this tool." The machine comes with a 25' roll of adhesive. I am already thinking of buying the Xyron 3402-06-40 Creatopia Refillz 2-Sided Lamination 40-Feet Cartridge to archive my child's school photos and awards and the Xyron - Creatopia Shapez - Shape Maker Die Press Starter Kit, COMING SOON when it's available. There are many cartridges that add to the versatility of this machine, and the bottom line: the cartridges you own MAKE the machine what you want it to be.
OPERATION: EASE OF USE
The directions that come with this machine are not great. Dare I say, for me at least, they were bad. I almost went to the Xyron site to see if I could find video tutorials, but after almost 2 hours of playing with the Cutz starter kit and the Patternz (embossing) starter kit, I finally figured out how to add and remove cartridges with ease and get the desired effect. I also learned how to position the adhesive cartridge to properly feed it through the rollers.
If you're thinking that I'm just bad with directions... I have built desktop computers from the ground up, and am always called by other members of my family to set-up home electronics. I think if there is one flaw in the Creatopia machine packaging, it's in the directions. Clear, concise, step-by-step instructions with photos that are bigger than a postage stamp would be a helpful reference when getting used to and setting up the machine for each new function.
Once you get past the 'how to do I put it together' thing, it's easy. Slide the cartridges you want to use into the machine until it locks the cartridge into place. Crank the handle clockwise as you feed the paper or fabric (up to 1/2" thick) into the machine.
VALUE
If you know what you want to do with the machine initially, you'll save yourself some money. The machine ships with 25' of adhesive and that's it. Starter kits for cutting and embossing will run between twenty-five and thirty dollars with limited options in each kit. You're mainly paying for the main cartridge that seats in the machine. The cartridges that expand each function run another ten to fifteen with 2 new options in each. Examples: Xyron 3404-33-00 Creatopia Border Patternz Border-Embossing Roller Cartridge, Stars and Xyron 3405-33-00 Creatopia Cutz Blade Cartridge Kit, Set of 2, Pinking.
Yes, this machine offers many handy functions in one portable, manually operated package, but the costs will rise quickly the more options you add to it. Not uncommon to specialty craft items, but something to be considered.
CONCLUSION
The Xyron Creatopia Multi-Function Crafting Machine allows you to cut, emboss, adhere, laminate and cut out shapes without heat, batteries or electricity. Items up to 12" in width and 1/2" in depth can be fed through this machine, adding to its versatility.
Cartridges that expand the uses of this machine are bulky and will need storage space. They are well made and serve their intended purposes well, but are somewhat heavy due to the rollers that are used. Starter kits are somewhat expensive, but needed to accomplish the tasks as promised by the machine.
Offerings for the expansion of this machine are somewhat limited at the time of this writing, but Xyron promises more options soon including a die cutting cartridge. Prices are reasonable when considering the 'multi-function' capabilities of the machine and other crafting tools on the market.
This machine will appeal to crafters who sew, scrapbook, or make cards, and also to teachers and parents who like to help their kids with school projects.
A good machine that seems to be durably built and full of promise.

Sew, So Cute (Leisure Arts #4809) Review

Sew, So Cute (Leisure Arts #4809)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a beginner sewer--not having sewn in 35 years (since early teens) and just re-entering about 3-4 months ago.
I just ordered this book and received it on 3/25. The reason for the 3 is that I commend the publishers for putting it in a spiral form--which makes it easer for us to use it while we are sewing. I even looked at the image before purchasing.
Although there are some useful patterns (diaper bags, baby bibs, some aprons), many in my opinion, I could have (and seen) pulled off of the internet for free. For instance: pincushions, potholder and mit, bunny rabbit(?). I can't use any of those.
Also, and again, for the beginner, the instructions just tell you what to get, whot to cut out. There's not step-by-step guidelines on ANY of the patterns.
I don't blame Leasuire Arts because I ordered their Home Decor book the same time I ordered this (only directly from Leisure Arts) and it's very clear and has useful patterns.
So, today I made arrangements for a refund because it wasn't what the descriptions cracked it up to be. Also, my book came damaged. The box was damaged. I had several other books from KWIK SEW in the same box that were not damaged. The KWIK SEW books were wrapped in plastic, this book was not.
I would not recommend this book for any level. If I am disappointed as a true novice, I'd hate to hear what an intermediate, let alone an advanced sewer might think!
You may get some delight again from the fact that it is spiral, the pics are all color, and the sizes of the pics are OK. The print is readable--not small like some sewing books. That's my 2 cents.

Whatever your skill level, these Mary Engelbreit designs to sew will bring out the best in your creative spirit. Choose your favorite fabrics and start stitching aprons, baby bibs, place mats, and sewing accessories, just to name a few! Enclosed spiral hardcover binding makes the book easy to use, and there's a Sewing Primer to help you gather your supplies and sew every stitch, whether by hand or machine. And when a project calls for a pattern, you ll find it in the beautiful envelope on the inside cover. We like this idea of keeping the full-size patterns tidy and close-at-hand so you can reuse them as many times as you wish. These 26 designs are more than just exciting items to sew; they're also gifts you'll be proud to make for everyone you know.

Brother 40-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine CE4000 Review

Brother 40-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine CE4000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach sewing lessons in Spring Texas (www.GetSewing.com). I was tired of students bring "problem" machines. I bought this machine for because two students brought ones like it and I was impressed with the quality for the price range. A good thing is, you can sew very slowly. The machine goes when you press on the foot pedal, it doesn't growl and hesitate. You can also sew fast too. The only thing I don't like on this model is that every time you stop, it stops with the needle down in the fabric and you must turn the hand wheel to move it up. It would be much more useful if the needle stopped in the position.

Mundial 585-CS Specialty Forged 6 Applique Scissors, Pelican Bill/Offset Blades

I purchased these scissors for a project I was doing with a reverse applique. They worked great and cut through the knit fabric with no problem at all and they weren't too heavy in my hand, which was a big plus. They were very comfortable to use once I got the hang of the odd shape. I would recommend these scissors if you do reverse appliques, for sure.

Cricut Cartridge, Storybook Review

Cricut Cartridge, Storybook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
ADORE this cartridge. I use this thing for more designs than any other cartridge I own, not that I own that many. It is SO versatile, and this is coming from a mom with two boys and NO girls. I use it for my own scrapbook (kind of a physical journal I'm putting together about me, and the only place I really can use my girlie supplies!) AND for our family scrapbook. There are a few birds, pretty flowers, and awesome borders, accents... I mean, I could go on. I LOVE the versatile shapes, including scalloped circles, ovals, squares, rectangles... There's a branch with flowers that I absolutely love... I simply don't have enough time to sit and write all of the things I love about this cartridge!
The alphabet does have a dreamy quality to it, but it also has a decidedly Western feel to it (cut it in brown), which is perfect for accenting pages for my family and my boys, too. It also has a fancy alphabet that is so incredibly beautiful, I use it to accent and label all of my supplies.
All in all, if you're debating over this cartridge vs. another one, I'd say go for this one, hands down! I think Cricut may have lost themselves some business with this one because, seriously, I don't even care about buying more cartridges now that I have this one.

I recently made eighteen yards of bias tape with this tape maker - it was a breeze. It's easy to use and the finished result looks really good. If your desired end result is double-fold bias tape, remember that you will need to fold it again after it's initial run through the tape maker and iron it at the center fold.
